When someone mentions that it's "up country a little bit," we will pay greater attention in the future. We recently spent two days on the only Gambian road heading east to visit various villages. This journey was part of our efforts to complete our projects by 2025.
Exploring the Villages
Bantanto village is the furthest inland. On our way, we visited several notable locations including Bansang, Faraba Sutu, which boasts a wonderful vegetable garden, Sotokoi, Janjanbureh village and clinic, Mboyeen Dara, and Nyfiending village and garden. Each stop was a testament to the resilience and determination of the local communities.

We also visited the North Bank villages via the very slow ferry crossing the Gambian River. We are delighted to report that all the projects in these areas are working well. We received heartfelt thanks from the committees at Njongon, MBullet Ba, Jamagen, Samba Yassin, and Chessey.
Achievements in Clean Water Access
All the water systems in these villages are functioning effectively. The achievements of the women in the gardens are nothing short of amazing. We now have 30,000 Gambians with clean drinking water. This is a significant milestone for us and the communities we serve.
The water committees play a crucial role in maintaining these systems. They collect funds monthly from the villagers for future maintenance and any necessary repairs. Before we invest in a new water system, we ensure that each village commits to this responsibility.
Next Steps: Addressing Water Needs
On our way back, we stopped at Jawlaba School, which has 220 pupils but no water at all! This presents our next project. The old well stopped working in early 2024, and the new headmaster reached out to us for assistance. Fortunately, there is a fenced area measuring 50 by 50 meters beside the school that can be transformed into a vegetable garden. This would allow parents to collect water while picking up their children.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

The Impact of Clean Water
Clean water is essential for health and well-being. It prevents waterborne diseases and promotes better hygiene. Access to clean drinking water also supports education. Children can focus on their studies instead of worrying about illness caused by contaminated water.
In Gambian villages, the introduction of clean water systems has transformed lives. Families can now spend more time on productive activities rather than fetching water from distant sources. This change has empowered women, who traditionally bear the burden of water collection.
Community Engagement and Sustainability
Sustainability is at the heart of our projects. We work closely with local communities to ensure they are involved in the maintenance of water systems. This engagement fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility. Villagers are more likely to care for the systems if they have invested their time and resources.
The monthly contributions collected by water committees are vital. They ensure that funds are available for repairs and maintenance. This proactive approach helps prevent future issues and guarantees the longevity of the water systems.
Future Projects and Goals
Looking ahead, we aim to expand our efforts. There are still many villages that lack access to clean water. Our goal is to reach every community in need. We plan to implement new projects that address the specific challenges faced by these villages.
One of our upcoming initiatives involves the construction of additional wells and water systems. We will also focus on educational programs that teach communities about water conservation and hygiene practices.
Conclusion: Join Us in Making a Difference
The journey towards providing clean water in Gambian villages is ongoing. We have made significant strides, but there is still much work to be done. Your support can help us reach our goals and improve the lives of countless individuals.
Together, we can create a future where every Gambian has access to clean drinking water. Join us in this mission, and let’s make a lasting impact.
